SCIENTIFIC BIOGRAPHY
After completing my DVM studies at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca and a one and a half Master of Science in small animal medicine and surgery at the same Faculty, I pursued my interest in small animal surgery. The training in veterinary surgery provided me with unique hands-on clinical experience as well as exposure to a wide range of research opportunities and facilities. The faculty has facilitated my professional growth in veterinary medicine and, specifically, in small animal surgery and served as the nice learning environment preparing for the small animal residency. After 8 years postgraduate I was accepted as a resident of European College of Veterinary Surgeons, under supervision of Joshua MILGRAM (Diplomate ECVS).
I am joining now the Small Animal Department headed by Prof. Liviu OANA.
As a clinician in the field of small animal surgery, my scientific interest and work is in domain of bone biomechanics and prosthesis:
1) Biomechanics of the stifle joint in dogs; passive range of motion and particularly considering testing passive range of motion after corrective osteotomies for cranial cruciate ligament disease (TTA, TPLO)
2) Applications of Metal Additive Manufacturing in Veterinary Orthopedic Surgery; Titanium medical implants 3D printing (with Technion Israel Institute of Technology and Koret School of Veterinary Medicine, Israel).
Over the years, I have identified and described new clinical conditions and diseases in dogs and other species. These include perianal teratoma in a cat, vaginal prolapse with irreversible rectal prolaps in a dog, unusual location of meningioma in cervical spinal cord in a dog, utility of genicular axial pattern flap in tibial defects in dogs and 3D CT assessment for femoral head and neck ostectomy after improper technique.
I have also searched for an assessment of passive laxity of the cranial cruciate deficient stifle in dogs after TPLO and TTA, which are the most common techniques of the canine cruciate ligament disease. I investigated the possibility of understanding the joint biomechanics after these techniques to improve the outcome.
With my researches I want to present new insights into mechanisms of passive motion of the canine stifle joint, which is well-described in humans. I have collaborated with the Laboratory of Bone Biomechanics from Koret School of Veterinary Medicine, Israel to examine the movement of the tibia relative to the femur during passive flexion and extension of the canine stifle. For that, we tested stifle cadaveric specimens in 3 different positions. The positions were chosen so that the stifle joint would be fully extended under the force of gravity. The location of the tibia relative to the femur was recorded at full extension and then at different angles. The results of this study are consistent with the concept of an envelope of passive knee motion. The consistency of the path over the range of motion would support the concept that the joint surface and isometric fascicles in the ligaments surrounding the joint guide the movement of the intact unloaded knee.
Other important studies were related to cervical spinal cord disk disease in dogs. Cervical intervertebral disk herniation with associated spinal cord injury is a common condition in dogs. Intervertebral disc degeneration or disease leads to extrusion or protrusion of disc material into the spinal canal, resulting in clinical signs caused by neural tissue compression and/or concussion. There are multiple surgical treatment options reported but with similar outcomes. We wanted to compare three versions of the ventral slot (slanted, full, mini) and normal cervical spines in forty rabbit cervical vertebrae. The laboratory analysis of the rabbit cervical spines revealed that the slanted slot was more stable that the full slot, with at flexion failure the slanted slot being 70% the strength of the normal cervical spine compared to 26% for the full ventral slot and the mini 30%. In torsion the slanted slot was 74% as stiff as the normal spine whilst the full slot was 58% and the mini 62%. The results of the laboratory experiments on the rabbit cervical spines revealed that the slanted slot maintains stability of the cervical spine more than the full ventral slot. A laboratory analysis to failure between the different versions has not been carried out before.
As I look into the future, my current areas of research interest are:
1. To establish which of the currently accepted osteotomies to manage cruciate ligament in dogs will provide a better passive stability of the joint postoperatively.
2. To see if 3D printing implants are valid methods in case of bone neoplasia or other conditions of bone loss in dogs
3. To investigate the ventral position of the plate in case of triple pelvic osteotomies to treat hip dysplasia.
4. To investigate if the differences between dogs and humans geometry of acetabulum would influence the fixation and long term outcome of total hip replacement.
